Chapter 5: Expanding Policy Advocacy Across National Borders
Immigrant – a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country
Globalization – broad and complex phenomenon that impacts almost every aspect of life in the
united States and most nations, including their economies, education systems, health and
human service systems, relations among ethnic groups, patterns of immigration, and
emigration, mass media and cultures.
Washington Consensus – policy consensus
International Monetary Fund – instituted in the wake of World War II to rebuild Europe by
providing loans and grants assimilated by contributions of different nations – to nations in
need.
World Trade Organization – serve as a forum for trade negotiations between nations, as well as
to enforce its decisions through specific penalties and fines.
Refugee – a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war,
persecution, or natural disaster.
Internally displaces persons (IDPs) – persons who have been displaces by wars, natural
disasters, tribal conflicts, or internal conflict.
Asylum seekers – persons whose claim to be refugees and IDPs has not yet been documented.
Al-Qaeda – implemented the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.
Family visas – include ones for persons with close relations with a U.S. citizen, such as fiancees,
spouses, and children = as well as visas for persons with more distant family relationships with a
U.S. citizen
Green cards – grant lawful permanent residency to persons including permission to live and
work in the United States.
Work visas – issues every year, such as ones for business visitors, registered nurses, persons of
extraordinary ability in the arts, business, athletics, education or science, and agriculture.
Student visas – given to academic or language students, exchange visitors, or vocational or
nonacademic students
Undocumented persons – people who have not obtained legal status in the Unted States
