Intimate partner violence is a pervasive social issue affecting one in four women in the united. States and is one of the most chronically underreported crimes. The term ips is more widely used than the term domestic violence as it is more inclusive in recognizing the different types of intimate relationships, including sexual minorities. The dynamics of ipv follows a pattern of escalating abuse that can become life threatening and a times it does end with the victim being murdered by her intimate partner. Ipvis characterized by power and control, specifically one intimate partner exerting power and control tactics over the other. The cycle of violence describes a pattern of three distinct phases that occur in ipv: the tension-building phase; the acute battering episode; and the honeymoon phase. Victims or survivors often describe that they remember the love that existed prior to the abuse and do not necessarily want the relationship to end; they want the abuse to end.
