Invented social physics/positivism: need to make moral sense of the social order in a time of declining religious authority, we can determine right or wrong without god. Stage 1 (theological): divine will, everything is god"s plan. Stage 2: metaphysical: human behavior governed by natural, biological instincts. Needed to strip away society to understand drives and instincts.
