Document Summary
Gender: refers to the personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to being female or male. Gender is a dimension of social organization. Involves hierarchy (men and women in different terms of power/wealth) Gender strati cation: the unequal distribution of wealth, power, and privilege between men and women. Some think of the gender difference as natural" but we cannot think of social differences in biological terms. Some things (women nonvoting because they weren"t interested" in politics) are done because of cultural patterns that are blamed on gender. Major studies that highlight the different between masculinity" and femininity": the israeli kibbutz: Men and women share very similar jobs (taking care of children, repairing building, security & making decisions for the group) Children are often raised in dormitories away from families. Women reached much more (yet not complete) equality: margaret mead"s research: (1935)
