Society- complex human organization; a collection of people bound by shared institutions that define how human relations should be conducted. Social scientists have grown skeptical that ethnicity or nationalism will become a thing of the past or that collective identities will somehow no longer be central in defining who we are. Ethnicity- specific attributes that make one group culturally different from others. A set of institutions that bind people together through a common culture. Language, religion, geographic location, customs, appearance, history. Ascription- the assigning of particular quality at birth. People do not choose their ethnicity- they are born into them. Nation- a group that desires self-government through an independent state. National identity- a sense of belonging to a nation and a belief in its political aspirations. National identity implies a demand for greater freedom through sovereignty and equality. National identity nationalism- pride in one"s people and the belief that they have a unique political destiny.
