POLS 157 Chapter Notes - Chapter NA: The Strange Career of Pan-Arabism: Arab Nationalism, Vehicle Frame, Arabs
Document Summary
Ideology is a synonym for political extremism in american politics: thus, it is not surprising that in america we are suspicious and fearful when people abroad proudly proclaim their adherence to any ideology. From their eyes this means that their policies flow from a comprehensive and logically integrated body of principles. From american eyes it means that they are pursuing some mad utopian scheme that is usually hostile to american interests and values. Because middle eastern politics has historically been carried out in an ideological atmosphere americans inevitably view the politicians of that region with distrust. Arab nationalism has had the greatest impact within the middle east and throughout the world of any ideology that emerged in the middle east. It is aimed at the political resurrection of a people, struggling against the artificial political divisions imposed on their homeland by foreign empires.
