Tycho brahe: (1546-1601: used his position & wealth to study skies & design, & built instruments that permitted the most accurate pre telescopic measurements ever made. Arcminute: angular measure equal to 1/60th of 1 degree (planetary positions: proof against current models. Supernovas - showed it lay far beyond supposed spheres that move the planets. Comet - showed it lay far beyond the moon (not within earth"s atmosphere as taught at the time) Brahe"s model: all planets, except earth, orbit around the sun. Last great astronomer to hold that the earth was at the center of the universe. Essentially same as copernican model, except for the change of perspective about whether earth moved around sun or vice versa. I: german astronomer who first discovered the elliptical orbit of mars, briefly assisted brahe. Kepler"s first law: used brahe"s data to plot out the path mars took through space - discovered the ellipse.
