Patient intentionally produces or feigns physical symptoms from a wish to be a patient. People often go to extremes to create appearance of illness. Often research supposed ailments and are impressively knowledgeable about medicine. Many eagerly undergo painful testing or treatment. Common among people who: received extensive treatment for medical problem as a child, carry a grudge against the medical profession, have worked as nurse, laboratory technician, or medical aide. Factitious disorder imposed on another: parents or caretakers make up or produce physical illnesses in their children. Somatic symptom disorder: excessively distressed, concerned, and anxious about bodily symptoms that they are experiencing, and lives are greatly disrupted by symptoms, somatization pattern: individual experiences a large and varied number of bodily symptoms. Ailments typically have little or no physical basis. Often describe symptoms in dramatic and exaggerated terms. 2 2% of women experience this in given year. >2% of men experience this in given year.
