Unemployed: people who do not have a job and are actively looking for one. Unemployment rate = (unemployed / labor force) x 100. Labor force participation rate = (labor force / population 16 yrs and older ) x 100. Military personnel and prisoners are excluded from these measures. Over the last 50 years, there has been an increase in women in the labor force. A lot depends on how much the govt is involved. In countries where the govt support is the most generous, there is less incentive to work and unemployment will tend to be higher. Alternative measures of unemployment and why they are important. Discouraged workers: people who looked for work the past year but have stopped looking because they don"t think there"s any jobs out there. Marginally attached workers: includes discouraged workers and workers who are not looking for a job for other reasons (i. e. lack of childcare and transportation)
