Intension: specified by listing properties or attributes that the term connotes - in other words, its sense. Extension: the class or collection of objects to which the term applies - in other words, what the term denotes (its reference) Empty class - some terms have intension but no extension (i. e. all fictional characters) Increasing intension: increase in specificity (ex. water, ocean, pacific ocean) Intensional definitions: assigns a meaning to a term by listing the properties or attributes shared by all the objects that are denoted by the term. Assigns a meaning to a term by providing another term with the same meaning. Assigns a meaning to a term by investigating its origin. Difficult because words change meaning over time: synonymous definition, word origin definition, operational definition, genus and difference the attribute that distinguishes the members of that species. Defines a term by specifying a measurement procedure. Ex. to define academic achievement by using gpa or teacher recommendation letters.
