Herbert spencer: general, sci theory of society interest: social change, evolution (soc. , physical, & intellectual) Karl marx: capitalism: economic system based on one group (capitalists/owners) owning what is needed for production and a second group (proletariat/workers) owning little but their capacity for work a. i. Capitalists: own what is needed for production factories, machines, tools- in a capitalist syst. a. ii. Proletariat: only truly own their labor, which they sell to the capitalists to survive a. iii. Therefore: proletariat will realize the detriment of the system, overthrow communism. Important b/c prediction about the growing gap from top and rest: drive down wages a lot e: however history has failed to overturn capitalism ways of thinking are still useful.
