Everyone is a member of multiple social groups. Social group: a group of people who share a range of physical, cultural, or social characteristics within on of the categorites of social identity. Social workers must consider how they are influenced by their own social group memberships, as well as the social group memberships of their clients. Americans tend to think of differences between social groups as facts of nature. Race, gender, sexual orientation, and class are all socially constructed. Social construction theory contends that people create differences with ideas and vales and that the differences are not based on physiological realities. Socially constructed beliefs about social groups usually reflect the dominant way of thinking but could be inaccurate and may change. 80% of the current u. s. population is white, or anglo. Latino population expected to double over the next 50 years, as well as the asian. Spanish will become a more common language.
