Document Summary
Competence and environmental press (lawton and nahemow)- a view that aging is a complex interaction between a person"s competence level and environmental press. Competence- the upper limit of a person"s ability to function in five domains. Environmental press- demands put on a person by environment. Physical demands- anything physical you might have to do because of the environment (example: walking up stairs to get to your apartment/bedroom) Interpersonal demands- adjusting behavior patterns to different types of people. Social demands- involves dealing with laws of customs that place certain expectations on people. Both competence and environmental press changes as people move through the lifespan. The demands put on you by the environment change with age. Adaptation level- where environmental press level and competence are in balance; in other words your competence level meets the needs or demands the environment is putting on you.
