Document Summary

Location and organs: the kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs found along the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity. Organs: two kidneys, two ureters, urinary bladder, bladder, urethra. Medulla: flesh(cid:455) (cid:862)(cid:373)iddle(cid:863) regio(cid:374) arranged in cones (pyramids). 3. 2. 3. blood supply and innervation: the renal cortex is where blood is filtered, the functional unit of a kidney is the nephron, of which there are approx. Distal tubule meets the afferent and efferent arterioles at the juxtaglomerular apparatus. Proximal tubule - uncontrolled reabsorption and secretion of substances. Loop of henle osmotic gradient produced for filtrate concentration. Distal tubule and collecting duct variable, controlled reabsorption and secretion of substances. Urine is formed in the kidneys through a filtration of blood. The urine is then passed through the ureters to the bladder, where it is stored. During urination, the urine is passed from the bladder through the urethra to the outside of the body.
