COUN222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Cognitive Restructuring, Operant Conditioning, Cognitive Revolution
Document Summary
Behaviorist came up with, due to not believing in freud psychoanalytic. Classical conditioning - unhelpful emotional responses to neutral/benign stimuli are often learned by association. Operant conditioning - behaviour is influenced by its consequences. We are: more likely to engage in behaviour for which we receive positive or negative reinforcement; less likely to engage in behaviour for which we are punished or that is not reinforced, i. e. , ignored. Attention to specific problematic behaviour - phobias or a specific behaviour issues of a child. Behaviour therapy not good for disorders such as depression. Emphasis on an evidence-based approach to therapy - to know what they are doing is helpful and working for the client. Encourages clients to: engage in adaptive behaviours, not allow pathological internal experiences to dictate behaviour. Relatively cost-effective - 6-10 session but need to be a specific problematic behaviour for the therapy to be useful problematic behaviour for the therapy to be useful.
