Nerve Supply of the Lower Limb
9.1 Define the following terms
Spinal cord
-cylindrical bundle of nerve fibres and associated tissue which is enclosed in the spine, forming
CNS
Ventral ramus
-distributed to the muscles of the anterior and lateral trunk, and the corresponding skin
-anterior division of a spinal nerve
-supply the anterolateral parts of the trunk and limbs
Dorsal ramus
-distributed to the muscles of the back, and the skin covering those muscles
-posterior division of spinal nerve
-emerge after the nerve emerges from the intervertebral foramen
-carries information that supplies muscles and sensation to the back
Motor nerve
-Nerve carrying impulses from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland
-transmit information that controls the activity of muscle and glands
Sensory nerve
-(afferent) nerve that carries sensory information toward the CNS
- transmit information about conditions inside and outside the body
Mixed nerve
-carries motor, sensory and autonomic signals between the spinal cord and the body- spinal
nerves
Root value
-the sector or sectors of the spinal cord from which a nerve originates
9.2 Describe the nerves roots which comprise the lumbar and lumbosacral plexes
Lumbar plexus Lumbosacral plexus
9.3 Identify the following branches of the lumbar and lumbosarcral plexes on the anterior
spinal cord model and specimens and describe their distribution

Lumbar plexus
femoral
-ant. division supplies sartorious and gives med. and lat. branches of ant. Cutaneous nerve
of thigh
obturator
-ant. branch sends branches to adductor longus, gracilis, adductor braves and pectineus
-Sensory to skin on med. side of thigh
lateral femoral cutaneous
-ant. branch supplies anterolateral surface of thigh as far as knee
-post. branch supplies lat. prox. 2/3 of thigh below greater trochanter
genitofemoral
-genital branch supplies cremaster then sensory to skin of scrotum
-femoral branch supplies skin over upper part of femoral triangle
Lumbosacral plexus
superior gluteal
-superior supplies gluteus medius
-inferior supplies gluteus medius and minimus and TFL
inferior gluteal
-supplies gluteus maximus
sciatic
-gives articular branches to knee joint
-splits into common fibular (peroneal) and tibial nerves
-gives muscular branches to semitendinosus, semimebranosus, biceps Deloris and adductor
magnus
posterior femoral cutaneous
-supplies skin of lower part of buttock, post. aspect of thigh, popliteal fossa and upper calf
9.4 State the root value of the femoral, obturator and sciatic nerves
Femoral
-formed by post. divisions of L2-4 nerves
Obturator
-formed by ant. divisions of L2-4 nerves unite within psoas major
Sciatic
-formed by ventral rami L4,5, S1-3
9.5 For each of the following nerves,
identify the nerve and describe its
course through the lower limb, and
describe it sensory and motor
distribution:
saphenous
-longest branch of femoral nerve
-supplies skin and fascia of front and
side of knee, leg and foot
tibial
common peroneal
sural
superficial peroneal
deep peroneal
medial plantar
lateral plantar
9.6 State the innervation of the following
joints, and develop a general rule for the
nerve supply of joints:
Hip
