Document Summary

Topic 9: nerve supply of the lower limb. 9. 1 define the following terms: spinal cord. The continuation of the medulla oblongata from the brain to the conus medullaris at the level of l1/l2. Long tubular structure lying within the vertebral canal. Central h-shaped core of grey matter (cell bodies) presenting ventral (anterior) and dorsal (posterior) horns. White matter (axons) surrounds grey: ventral & dorsal ramus. Immediately beyond the intervertebral foramen, each spinal nerve divides into two branches- ventral and dorsal rami. The anterior division of the spinal nerve, supplying the anterolateral parts of the trunk and the limbs. They are mainly larger than the posterior rami. They supply the sides and anterior parts of the body wall, the limbs, and the perineum. All dorsal rami pass backwards into the tissues of the back, innervating principally the back muscles, and the ligaments and joints of the vertebral arches.
