Psych and Crim Justice Eyewitness Testimony II Notes
Believing you heard something you didn’t i.e. the DRM paradigm with the list of words from last week
59% people said they heard the word cold, when it wasn’t mentioned.
Results of the video incident – i.e. assault and robbery where what happened from different points of view in
the bar scene. How many perps were there, majority said 1 or 2 form different points of view in the room. What
the victim dropped, again different perspectives, phone and money is dropped.
Conversation contamination, witnesses discussing the event and remembering false details.
Confident eyewitnesses are more likely to make accurate identifications than to a unconfident eyewitness –
61% say true which was wrong. 39% said false which was correct.
Getting it right: eyewitness ID
System variables
Descriptive evidence and police interview techniques
Identification evidence and identification parades
Scott Frazer talk
The role of expectation
Video on rape victim tyring to ID the offender, eyewitness ID, descriptive description of the assailant, 2 days
after rape asked to view a photo line-up, narrowed down to two people. Police may have unconsciously
provided information to help her ID the assailant, so her confidence in choosing the “right” person increased.
Conviction only based on eyewitness, he was exonerated. Another man had raped her, not the man she had
picked from the line-up. Incorrect eye witness can lead to wrongful conviction and often lead to the
imprisonment of the wrong person. (Ronald Cotton wrongfully convicted) though he had previous breaking
entering and as a teenager had charges of sexual assault. OJ Simpson Case ( on channel 10 last night)
