Radical Restoration
Assisted Translocation/Migration
Translocation is not a radical idea
BUT, “assisted” translocation:
oPlan to get ahead of climate change
oPredictions from global warming is that the optimal habitat for most
organisms will shift
To get to cooler places:
Poleward
Higher in altitude
Deeper in waterbodies
Assisted Migration (AM)
oMost species are going to change their distributions in response to
global warming changes
oBUT  the rate is likely to far exceed what organisms have had to deal
with before
E.g. boreal (coniferous) forest trees may face a need to move
10-20X faster than they ever have
oIdentify those taxa that are too slow to cope
Then move subpopulations of them ahead of time

Document Summary

But, assisted translocation: plan to get ahead of climate change, predictions from global warming is that the optimal habitat for most organisms will shift. Assisted migration (am: most species are going to change their distributions in response to global warming changes, but (cid:0) the rate is likely to far exceed what organisms have had to deal with before. E. g. boreal (coniferous) forest trees may face a need to move. 10-20x faster than they ever have: identify those taxa that are too slow to cope. Then move subpopulations of them ahead of time. Only single, high-valued species are likely to be translocated: rather than whole assemblages. Putting species into places they have never been before: novel ecosystems could arise. The impacts upon species/assemblages living in the destination: they may be coping ok with climate change up to that point. Common in both terrestrial and marine habitats. Reasons for moving: local to region rather than continental to global.
