Listening is the interpretive process that takes place with respect to what we hear. Through listening we comprehend, store, classify and label information. Obviously these proportions would vary at an individual level and would be largely influenced by the person"s role and job. Listening is the conscious, knowing response to a message. Listening and hearing are not the same thing. Hearing is a physiological process in which sounds are processed [many of which are ignored / filtered out]. Listening on the other hand involves a conscious effort to psychologically process those sounds in combination with any acocmpanying nonverbal cues and apply meaning to them. So listening then involves hearing sounds, interpreting them and then attaching meaning to them. The textbook describes listening as being a 5 stage process; Step 1 involves receiving the verbal & nonverbal messages. Step 2 involves understanding the speaker"s thoughts and emotions.
