Document Summary

Smooth muscle is not any less involved or any less important than skeletal muscle, in fact it is very important ultimately because this tissue keeps you alive. Most of the systems within the body are regulated almost entirely by smooth muscle and you need smooth muscle to regulate all of the systems to keep you alive. Smooth muscle is often called the muscle of the internal organs as it is in the wall of most of our hollow organs apart from the heart as this is cardiac muscle. They are very important for the eyes, the little muscles that bend the lens of your eyeball to allow you to focus is smooth muscle. Hair follicles is smooth muscle, so goosebumps or your hair standing on end, this is due to smooth muscle action as well. Very few smooth muscles have names because smooth muscle generally doesn"t occur as a nice distinct anatomical structure.
