PHE101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: World Health Organization, Health Equity, Centrelink
Document Summary
Week 1 - introduction to social determinants of health: define health and what determines our health status. Social determinant of health are conditions or circumstances in which we are born, live, work and age and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. Genetic factors, individual"s behavioural factors and social factors: recognise the importance of social determinants of health for health professionals. Although most of the social determinants of health are not clinical or health care related, these factors are impacting the health and wellbeing of our clients. Unless we understand these social factors and their impact, the care or solutions that we offer may not be comprehensive or useful for our clients. So, we should look beyond the illness to see the whole person and try to understand the reality of the daily situation. Health professionals can also link the clients to support services, such as centrelink, community services and so on.
