Last week: is schooling education: education is part of schooling but schooling could be separate from education, 4 transition periods: language, writing, printing, internet. This week: what is education: today: plato (conservative perspectives + ideal accounts of education, 3 pillars of education, 2 levels of education, 1 good of education. Educ264: fundamental reasons of education is to protect society, you need 2 kinds of people to do this: Protects from internal threats (judges, lawyers, military) Educ264: establishing the narratives that indoctrinate the guardians and make them commit themselves to society, set the rules involved in governance, they develop the society and train other people to protect it internally and externally. According to plato, the ultimate good is truthfulness, beauty and justice. Have a job to engender commitment to enquiry, society etc. Relates to the way it is taught instead of the end product. Medium of socialisation reinforces the norms. Blurring of boundaries + breaking down barriers.
