The topmost layer is called the stratum corneum and is made up of: Keratinocytes [keratin] (dead) form in the lower layers then rise p. Melanocytes (pigment generating cells) formi in lower layers. These actually sit on top of the nucleus of the keratinocytes and help to protect it. The bottommost layer is called the stratum basalis. It contains basal cells (skin forming cells) and a few merkel cells (touch sensitive cells) The dermis contains a lot of structures. It is made of collagenous fibres that are very elastic. Surrounded by smooth muscle and nerve endings. Can make hair stand on end etc (autonomic) It has upward projections which meet up with the epidermis to form a tight connection with it.
