Document Summary

Lecture 23 - inheritance of more than one gene: independent assortment. Number of different gametes = 2n where n=pairs of chromosomes. Can treat as 2 monohybrid crosses: (aa x aa)(bb x bb) = (3:1)(3:1) = 9:3:3:1. Modifier genes: 2 genes involved in a biochemical pathway, 2nd allele affects first allele: Epistasis the effect of one gene is dependent on the presence of one or more "modifier genes", i. e. the genetic background. Recessive epistasis 2 loci in a biochemical pathway interact the locus that masks the other has to be homozygous recessive to mask the other locus. Dominant epistasis the dominant allele of one gene masks the effects of either allele of the second gene (i. e. one whole gene masks one whole other gene) 1 aa : 2 aa : 1 aa.
