A yolk cracked itself against the distant horizon, bleeding streams of crimson across a wearied sky, spurts of warmth that tussled with the evening chill. I found myself within one of these, bathing in the river of light, dwarfed by the world"s infinitude like an ant who dreamt of being a man and loved it. That dream was over, the ant was awake. Rustling leaves murmured in hushed tones amidst the howling hymn of the wind, suddenly deafening as it crashed against rows of ancient blackwood that towered before me, sinuous rays fleecing through their arms. They stood like guardians, protectors of the river, ablaze in auburn glory as they shimmered beneath the falling sun. Never is a man more aware of his mortality than in such a moment, the limitations defining this existence suddenly clear as i sat beneath that morphing ceiling of violet and red.
