When external factors pressure ppl to engage in behaviours that they don"t want to - When external factors foster more internalized and intrinsic forms of motivation -> ppl become proactive & engaged. Inherent tendency to seek out novelty and challenges, to extend and exercise one"s capacities, to explore, and to learn. Intrinsic motivation: to act for the inherent satisfaction of the activity, regardless of external reward. Gives us a sense of mastery learn something new. Extrinsic motivation: to act to obtain a separable outcome from the activity. Maybe we feel pressured to do something. External regulation: extrinsic rewards or punishments.
