PHIL10003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Plat
Lecture 22: critiques on kant
Kant on beauty as perfection
• Leibniz: beauty is objective purposefulness
o Critique: form does not reveal the purpose
o Appreciating beauty and cognition are distinct acts
o Proper appreciation of beauty seems impossible -> reduced to seeing out of focus
• Two kinds of beauty -> accessory and free beauty
o Free beauty = mere form, our judgement of it is pure, imagination is playing = real
beauty at its core
• Problem w overrationalizing beauty -> associating it to cognition -> fail bc u have a short-
sightedness
Critiques - use and assess adequacy of kant's view
• Aesthetic appreciation independent of cognition? (K says YES)
• Does it involve 'free plat' of our cognitive powers?
Disinterest in attitude
• It looks great ut I don’t want it to eist
Art & nature
• Original beauty free, art gets to be beautiful by copying
o Limited view on what art can do
o Only have to copy things in nature for it to be beautiful
• Role of knowledge not essential, but not excluded
• You can have a really clever work but if it is not nicely formed it could never be beautiful
-> pleasing form essential to aesthetic judgement
• Man interpretations of art, don’t know whih is the est one -> we try out different
conceptualizations to figure out what we've got
• What happens when art fails to challenge u cognitively
• If you know everything about the art it dies for you -> lose aesthetic appreciation ->
maybe kant is on to something important in experiencing art
