Social Psychology 2
- perceptions of others
- age is a significant factor
- various factors influence the way you form impressions about others
- superficial processing of info
- systematic “ “ “ - ability & motivation
- group membership can influence your impression e.g. politician
- take observable info = process through sensory system = formulate idea about person
- cues = make inferences/attributions based on this, very spontaneously
- snap judgements - superficial fast impressions
- personality impressions: participants rated 66 faces on trustworthiness, aggressiveness,
likability & competency
- snap personality judgements: different group viewed same pics for 100ms, 500ms, 1000ms =
made snap judgement
- snap judgements very similar to more considered impressions
- The Case of Politicians
- comparison of 2 pics of US political candidates for US senate
- correspondence bias/cultural difference
- people in NA and Aus infer disposition to action even if it isn’t justified
- people in East and South Asian backgrounds - see person WITHIN social context
- impression formation (Solomon Asch, 1946)
- form an impression of entire person, traits perceived in relation to each other in proper place
within given personality
- Gestalt - structured view of a person - integrates pieces of information into whole
- first impressions = later info is integrated in the coherent whole with the first impression in
mind
- once you’ve formed an impression = behaviour is consistent with impression you’ve formed
- self-fulfilling prophecy - if you behave a certain way to a person expecting to have your
impression fulfilled = it will most probably happen (e.g. Macbeth)
