Document Summary

Housing can mean a range of environments. The more we created their environment, the more responsibility we have to make sure it is working. Dairy cows in countries such as britain and ireland are often housed for a winter period, and then let out to pasture from mid-spring to autumn. this means that the cows become accustomed to this yearly cycle over time. Well-designed and managed housing is not necessarily detrimental to overall cow welfare, and may have benefits in providing shelter and good access to feed in poor winter weather. At the same time, farmers will tell you that the cows anticipate and appear to enjoy being let out for the first time in spring in the year. It is better to adapt the housed environment to conform to the animal, rather than forcing the animal to adapt to an environment. Optimise the environment as much as possible to animal needs.
