BMS2021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Interrupt, Herpesviridae, Msh2
Document Summary
Despite normal constraints which inhibit cell proliferation and clonal expansion. I. e. cancer cell loses control over the cell cycle and cell division. Normally, a cell only divides following growth factor or hormones. Cancer cells invade areas normally reserved for other cells. Cell transformation: change from a normal cell to a cancer cell. Use the change of appearance of cells to diagnose the cancer cell. Understand the difference between benign and malignant tumours. Appear under the microscope like the tissues they came from. Do not cause problems unless they grow in confined space (i. e. brain) Do not resemble tissue or cell of origin. Have irregular structures, large variable nucleus, little cytoplasm, evidence of mitosis, little specialised structures. Cells are all members of a single clone, including cells that have spread to distant sites. Metastasis: cancers that invade other tissues and spread to other parts of the body. Pathogenic agent that spreads from an initial or primary site within the hosts body.
