Document Summary

Eae1022 lecture 8 - earth, atmosphere and environment. Temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of normally dry land areas from the unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source. Overland flooding : river flooding, flash flooding, outburst flood (glacial or dam) Ocean inundation: storm surge, tsunami, sea level rise. Bankfull stage: point at which river overtops banks. Flood stage: water level at which damage begins. Peak stage: highest level reached by flood size slope: cover. Dependent on preceding rainfall (peak prior to onset) Caused by short-lived (10s of minutes 1 hour), intense bursts of rainfall. Fast moving water can appear and disappear within minutes. Factors contributing to flash flooding: short-term, intense rainfall, thunderstorms or mesoscale convective systems, topography, geomorphology and soil types of terrain can channel water. Frequency and magnitude of extreme events are usually measured by an average return interval.
