Week 11 L3 (T5CL2) - The ANS and widespread body control
Transmission in the ANS (Sympathetic division):
oPreganglionic neuron:
Cell bodies in intermediolateral horn (IML, T1-L3) (middle of spine -thoracic
and lumbar regions)
Short myelinated axons exit spinal cord via ventral root
Project to para/prevertebral sympathetic ganglion (some project to adrenal
medulla) -close to spinal cord
Type B neurons
Divergence -branches and runs to multiple ganglia
Cholinergic & acts on nicotinic receptor -ion channel receptors fast
oPostganglionic neuron:
Cell body in sympathetic ganglion + longer axons to target tissues / organs
Low myelination -Type C neurons
Noradrenergic -GPCR (except for sweat glands: ACh)
Transmission in the ANS (Parasympathetic division):
oPreganglionic neuron:
Cell bodies in brainstem + Long myelinated axon exits brainstem via cranial
nerves 3, 7, 9 and 10
Cell bodies in sacral lateral horn of the spinal cord + myelinated axon exits
spinal cord via pelvic nerves (ventral root) (the bottom)
Very long -ganglia are near organs and tissues
Low divergence
Type B neuron
Cholinergic & acts on nicotinic ACh receptors -ion channel receptors fast
oPostganglionic neuron:
Cell body in parasympathetic ganglion (head) or within target organ
Short unmyelinated axons -Type C
Cholinergic & acts on muscarinic ACh receptors -GPCR slow
Note that the sites at which post-ganglionic neurons relay info are designed to be slow
Sympathetic post-ganglionic receptors:
