Document Summary
An erp is a suit of applications, called modules; a database; and a set of inherent processes for consolidating business operations into a single, consistent computing platform. An erp system is an information system based on erp technology. Erp systems integrate all of a(cid:374) orga(cid:374)isatio(cid:374)(cid:859)s purchasi(cid:374)g, hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) resources, production, sales and accounting data into a single system. The primary purpose of an erp system is integration: allows the left hand of the organisation to know what the right hand is doing, allowing for real-time updates. All activity is processed by erp application programs (called modules) and consolidated data are stored in a centralised erp database. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, some organisations attempted to develop their own erp applications and procedures, but they were too difficult and expensive to succeed. Erp software vendors then developed erp applications that included program code, databases and inherent processes that addressed issues; they are all licensed now.
