Lecture 1: course overview & introduction (part 1) Communication: a conscious or unconscious, intentional or unintentional process in which feelings and ideas are expressed as verbal or nonverbal messages; sent, received and comprehended. 5 types of communication: intrapersonal (communicating yourself, ex. I should eat ice cream or not?: interpersonal, group communication, public communication, mass communication. A principle is a rule that is inherent to the nature of something: communication can be intentional or unintentional, it is impossible not to communicate, communication is irreversible, communication is unrepeatable. A misconception is a commonly held rule that is incorrect: meanings are in words, successful communication always involves shared understanding, more communication is always better, communication will solve all problems. Models of communication: interactional model, idea based model, linear model. S communication source or generator of messages. M the message as the central element. C the channels through which the sender encodes and the receiver decodes the message.
