Sex and Gender
Sex vs Gender:
• Sex – what you are born with
• Gender – the roles you play in society
• Sexuality – your sexual affiliation
Theories:
• Essentialism – sees gender differences as a reflection of biological differences
between men and women
• Social Constructionism - gender differences as a reflection of the different social
positions occupied by women and men
Social Constructionism:
• We do geder
• A relational theory of gender
• Male and female is patterned
• Linked with power and emotional relations
Patriarchy:
• Men dominate and exploit woman
• Domestic sphere belonging to women
• Fouded o produtio ad reprodutio
Perspectives:
• Functionalist
• Symbolic interactionist
• Conflict theory
• Feminism
Gender Socialisation:
• Engage in the construction of gender
• A building of gender ideology
Stereotypes:
• Hegemonic masculinity is the dominant form of masculinity in a society
• It is often associated with heterosexuality, authority, physical toughness and
mateship
• Reinforced by media images
Gender:
• Gender Order - patterns of involvement of males and females in various social
activities (economics, workforce, mass culture, childhood/youth behaviours, private
sphere, violence and crime etc).
