feelings, thoughts and responsibilities (reality is what we make it)
Looking to ourselves as the only thing in existence
What we see is just our understanding
Bleak existence where there is no ultimacy, we struggle to make meaning
Point is to try and make as much meaning out of the meaningless as possible
Humanity gives experiences their meaning for humanity
Phenomology: description of objects of consciousness
Hermenutics: interpretation and meaning of conscious experience
Educators should focus on individual human reality (understand ourselves) and we should also
be able to take a positive role in the shaping of our own education and life – need to think of
students as individuals not as a whole mass of students to be taught the same
Humanities of high importance for understanding and wise action in the world
Emphasis on helping learners understand and comprehend lived experience
Educators role is to help enable the young people to conceptualise and develop a rational
perspective on their world
Teacher should act with courage to fulfil the notion of true individuality in one’s teaching,
should not be authoritative
Students should be encouraged to do things because they want to do them
Emphasis on creation: one can create ideas relevant to one’s own experience
Nietzsche:
Adopts standpoint of science
