Neurodevelopmental disorders: conditions that onset in development period, often manifest early in development (before child enters school, characterised by developmental impairments, produce issues with, social, personal, academic, occupational functioning. Defining developmental disorders: patterns of behavioural, cognitive, emotional or physical symptoms linked with, distress, disability. Increased risk for further suffering or harm: psychological problems that are a significant deviation from healthy developmental course, need to have a good understanding of the typical development first. In order to define what is atypical: need to also know the variability from this typical development in the population. It is important to avoid stigmatism with labels. Important to separate the child rom the disorder: labels describe behaviour, not the person, purpose of diagnosis, help describe and organise complex behaviour patterns.
