PSYC2215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Synapse, Episodic Memory, Memory Consolidation
Document Summary
Principles are general properties of human memory that transcend speci c experimental situations, task, stimuli and theoretical constructs. Search for common principles rather than divide memory into say stm and ltm. Dual store model (assume there is a separate stm and ltm). Support for this from neuropsychological patients with one impaired but not the other (never truly that clear cut). Serial position curve: order of presentation predicts probability of (free) recall of each item. Assumes you can now map any item on the list and know if they are recalled from stm or ltm. Primacy and recency e ects - when shown items for short time, recency e ect is stronger than primacy e ect. For long shown items, primacy and recency e ects are about equal. Delayed long presentation causes recency e ect to disappear - info decays from stm bc delay is over 30 seconds so cant be remembered short term.
