Cells classified by primary tissues described by their shape, number of layers, function and the extracellular material: epithelial cells different cells form different tissues, connective tissue cells, muscle cells, nerve cells. E p i t h e l i a l c e l l s: flattened cells, irregular shape, allows diffusion of gases, liquids, found at blood/tissue borders (e. g. blood vessels, kidney, lymphatic vessels, alveoli) Length, width and height equal: roughly cube shaped cells, central nucleus. C e l l s: protection for underlying cells and may be specialized for secretion or adsorption, found lining ducts (e. g. kidney), in glands (e. g. salivary, thyroid) M i c r o v i l l i small finger like projections of the surface cells.
