Tissues are groups of specialised cells and their surrounding substances. Taking a piece of tissue and using various imaging techniques to look at the cellular and non- cellular components of the tissues on a microscopic level. Extracellular matrix: the composition of non-cellular substances around the cell. Densely packed cells with little extracellular matrix: has a lot of cells and little substances between the cells. Acts as a protective covering of surfaces inside and outside the body: covers body surfaces and forms glands. The surface that has openings to the external environment or cavities in the body. Surfaces where epithelial cells are touching one another because they are densely packed. Where epithelial cells are attached to a structure called the basement membrane. The basement membrane is an extracellular structure formed by secretions of epithelial. It acts as acellular glue which holds and binds the epithelial cells together. It is a porous structure which allows for substances to move in and out.
