NRSG140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Basal Metabolic Rate, Imperial Units, Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
Review from semester 1 the roper logan tierney model. Nutrients are the substances found in food that are nourishing and useful to the body. The essential nutrients for life are: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water. Kilojoules (metric used in australia) and calories (imperial measure) measure the energy value of food: 1 calorie = 4. 2 kilojoules. Basal metabolic rate (bmr) is the amount of energy needed by the body to maintain essential functions. Diseases of excess and deficiency can result from imbalance of energy supply to need. Can occur due to poor dietary intake of essential nutrients; also known as a deficiency: anaemia/vitamin b12. Ricketts (vitamin: beriberi (vitamin b1, obesity and associated diseases (vitamin b1) Involves evaluating patients nutritional status, with collaboration from dieticians. Subjective global assessment: looks at weight loss, dietary intake, gi symptoms, functional capacity and physical assessment of muscles and fat stores. Anthropometry: size, weight and body composition muac and skinfolds.
