BIOL6: Genes: Replication and
Expression
Block 3: Gene structure & regulation in eukaryotes
Eukaryotic transcription
Eukaryotic transcription very similar to prokaryotes:
o Initiation, elongation and termination
Differences
o 3(-5) different polymerases
Common amongst all eukaryotes
Plants have 5 polymerases
All other eukaryotes have 3 polymerases
o Promotor recognition and initiation
Has different classes of RNA:
o
o There are so SO SO many different forms of RNA in eukaryotes (the list at 2 is only a
small amount of these
o Some of these RNA important in differential gene expression: whether genes are
expressed or not
Different classes of RNA polymerases
o
o RNA polymerase I: RNA transcription
o RNA polymerase II: transcribes pre-mRNA that makes protein, standard polymerase
when we talk about expression of proteins
o RNA polymerase III: transcription of tRNA
o Other 2 only in plants and have something to do with selective expression in plants
How was that discovered?
o Can't see polymerases
o Were discovered by the use of inhibitors
