PSYC2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Ballpoint Pen, Behavioural Sciences, Trace Evidence
Document Summary
Cant actually show impulsivity in the brain, but if you show them a brain scan, its trace concrete evidence. Natural scientific equipment more sciencey, so is more believable. Natural science topic more believable then behavioral science topics. People tend to believe things more when they are paired with a nice photograph. Example: "thermometers have magnesium in it" if people are shown a photo of a thermometer they are more likely to believe it (even though its not true, they have mercury) Mri - when people are shown them, they are more likely to believe that they do show if they are "lying" Mccabe and castel (2008) - very well-known study. Either presented people a graph or a brain scan. Even though the brain scan didn"t have anything to do with the article, people rated it more easily understood, clearer, more scientific, etc. Couldn"t replicate this study, the difference wasn"t big.
