Actual Self vs Ideal Self
-A healthy sense of wellbeing is established if an individual maintains a reasonable
consistency between ideal self + actual self
This is known as a congruence.
Incongruence can lead to low self-worth and maladjustment
Incongruence = defensive processes
Distortion - the meaning of experience is changed to reduce incongruence
Denial - of the experience
Positive Regard
-Positive social contacts may provide feeling loved
-Any form of attention is ‘positive regard’

Conditions of worth!
- obtaining positive regard!
- conditions of worth created by others: parents
The ‘would-should’ dilemma!
- the conflict between our personal needs and goals and the expectations of others!
- creates an ‘incongruence’ between our ‘ideal’ and actual self
