Question is important:
- Narrows down research and keeps you on track
Narrowing down researching
- Who
- What
- When
- Where
- Why
- How
E.g. questions
- Why does this happen? Has it changed?
- When does this happen? Has it changed?
- What happens? Has it changed?
You might finish writing and find that your research question or your reason for writing it has
changed.
- Your ability as an academic depends on your ability to find question of interest/topical
- Look for s lukig i ateial that you’e eadig
- Look at deepe iplicatios of autho’s aguet
- Look for contradictions in logic
- Is a point made and later reversed?
- Figuring out WHY to one of these questions puts you on the path to developing a working
thesis
Empirical research
- Observe by reading
- Relate to own experience
Assignment
- Asked to make a claim about your discipline and compare with other disciplines
- What are disciplines? Are they important? How are they defined/define themselves?
- How are writing conventions used to distinguish between disciplines?
- How do you compare the knowledge that is discovered in one discipline to the knowledge
that’s gaied i aothe disciplie?
- Do some disciplines make stronger claims to uncovering truths than others? E.g. science
makes stronger claims than humanities, but science discovery is provisional
- What is the discipline of literary studies (or other field)? What does it investigate? What
does it discover? What is the significance of its investigations and discoveries?
- 1500 words
- Can use sources studied through semester, so think of questions as you go
