Hi (patient name), Im Gemma, I will be your student physiotherapist for today.
Here to assess how your chest expands while breathing and to listen to your lungs.
This examination will require me to place my hands on your chest and will require the use of
a stethoscope. To do this your chest wall will need to be exposed so you will have to take off
your top.
During examination = normal breathing and occasionally deeper breathing.
Because we are doing lots of breathing you may experience
- Pain
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Wheeziness
Let me know immediately if you feel any of these at any point and I will stop and we can
take a break.
Do you understand this, do you have any questions, are you happy to continue?
I will close the curtains, pop top off for me, let me know when you are ready.
Posture: feet on ground, upright, breathing normally for me.
Im just going to watch how your chest wall expands so just breathe normally as I move
around and have a look.
** look front back and 2 sides
Next Im just going to place my hand flat on your upper chest while you breathe normally for
me, im just feeling the expansion. Are you ok for me to proceed?
** do each side before progressing
- waist – put your hands on your hips for me
- Stomach
Next im going to take your pulse rate for one minute, pop your arm up resting on your knee
making sure you stay sitting up nice and straight. I will just turn on the stopwatch.
** two fingers thumb side of left arm for pulse – actually count respiratory rate
Whilst checking your pulse I also looked at your respiratory rate and both those are normal.
Next I will be touching your accessory muscles around your chest area. These muscles don’t
usually work much while breathing so im just feeling to see if they are activating, is that ok?
Breathing normally for me as I do this, remember to let me know if you feel any of those
signs we discussed earlier.
- First is sternocleidomastoid, rotate your head form me, and come back to the centre
- ** repeat both sides
- scalenes
