PSYC 2143 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sensory Deprivation, Contract Killing, Prior Probability
Document Summary
You can see perception as the basis of all cognition. When people experience sensory deprivation they start to hallucinate and become agitated. In other words, total sensory deprivation is really bad. This underlines the importance of perception/ getting information from the outside world. It is how we give meaning to sensations (light, touch, etc. ) It is comprised of many steps that loop back on each other. You are (cid:374)ot (cid:374)e(cid:272)essaril(cid:455) a(cid:449)are (cid:449)he(cid:374) (cid:455)ou gi(cid:448)e (cid:373)ea(cid:374)i(cid:374)g to (cid:449)hat (cid:455)ou"re seei(cid:374)g. A stimulus is anything that surrounds you that you can perceive. O(cid:271)je(cid:272)ts that surrou(cid:374)d (cid:455)ou are(cid:374)"t a(cid:272)tuall(cid:455) i(cid:374) (cid:455)our (cid:373)i(cid:374)d, rather a represe(cid:374)tatio(cid:374) of the(cid:373) is in your mind. Transformation: transform sensations into action potentials inside your brain. Action: based on your perception you can take an action (for example: avoid someone that you see) Knowledge: past experiences (example given in class: a friend had a high fever and was watching a show which had hitmen in it.
