Document Summary
Blackbody radiation: the colour of radiation from any glowing body changes from red to orange to white as its tempera- ture increases. Blackbody: an opaque object that emits thermal radiation. At room temperature the object would appear perfectly black. Photoelectric effect: the release of electrons from a substance due to light striking the surface of metal. The energy of the electrons released is not determined by the brightness of the light. Blackbody radiation explained: plank developed a math equation to explain the curve representing the light emitted form a black- body, concluded that light emitted by a hot solid is quantized (bursts, not a continuous stream of energy) Photoelectric effect explained: frequency of light is more important than intensity, einstein built off of planks idea for photoelectric effect. Therefore frequency determines the kinetic energy of released electrons. Quantum theory: electromagnetic energy is not infinitely divisible; energy exists as packets or quanta, called photons.
