Developmental psychology has been influenced by the nature vs nurture debate. Keep in mind our discussions about scarr and mccartney"s genotype effects. The basic question is (cid:498)does what you"re born with genetically influence how you develop more than the environment that you"re born into? (cid:499) Keep in mind the genotype is expressed through the phenotype so we"re really. Simply put what causes a child to exhibit specific behaviours, characteristics and gifts. It is also important to consider maturation and experience. Experience is seen as occurring in any settings/situations the child is exposed to from biological to social. Biological: nutrition, medical care, drugs, physical accidents, pollutants. Social: family, peers, schools, communities, media, culture: nature vs nurture. Ignoring nature can prevent sociologists and social psychologists from understanding nurture. Ignoring nurture can prevent geneticists and psychologists focused on nature perspectives from understanding nature.
